Alien Child

3/3/2010

I came from far away
Maybe another galaxy
Or maybe it just felt that way
To a little kid like me.
Like the baby I was then
I was a complication
Something rather sudden
That happened on vacation.
So I spent a lifetime
Of being the wrong place
Often at the wrong time
With just the wrong face.
I looked just like my mother
But she was never welcome
In a home built of lies and fear
The atmosphere not wholesome.

Strange little alien kid
Bless your pointy head
Life can be a birthday party
Get a job instead.
Try to keep your strange ways
Firmly out of sight
Act like a natural child or
There's going to be a fight.
Goofy little alien child
You look so very wrong
Not like the other kids
Try to get along.

Because I was the alien
The creature from somewhere
I was the oddball doodad;
The stepchild with red hair.
I didn't quite look right
I didn't even talk the same.
And somehow that translated
To unforgivable shame.
It doesn't matter that children
Don't understand jealousy.
People who hate past spouses
The child only sees mystery.
Growing up, alone in a crowd
The child learns to adjust.
The other life is not spoken aloud
The kids do what they must.

Strange little alien kid
Bless your pointy head
Life can be a birthday party
Get a job instead.
Try to keep your strange ways
Firmly out of sight
Act like a natural child or
There's going to be a fight.
Goofy little alien child
You look so very wrong
Not like the other kids
Try to get along.
